Wildcatters Season Comes to an End
The Lafayette Wildcatters season came to an end on Thursday in Columbus, Georgia, with a 61-26 loss to the Columbus Lions.
The Lions had tasted disappointment in the playoffs the last two years and were determined not to let it happen again. Although the Lions lead the Southern Indoor Football League in almost every meaningful category, their goal coming in to the game was to start fast. Start fast they did as they returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then intercepted a Juan Joseph pass and returned it for a touchdown to jump out to a 14-0 lead barely two minutes into the game. The Wildcatters would take eight minutes off the clock on their next drive only to settle for a field goal. The Columbus offense finally took the field and wasted little time scoring on a Chris McCoy touchdown run to take a 21-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcatters would cut the lead to 28-13, but a failed onside kick attempt would give Columbus excellent starting field position and they would take advantage to make the score 35-13. Lafayette would get a Juan Joseph touchdown run to close within 36-20 at halftime.
The Wildcatters hoped the second half would be there half, but after receiving the second half kickoff , an interception snuffed out any momentum they had hoped to generate and Columbus would take advantage and extend their lead to 43-20, on Chris McCoy’s third touchdown run of the night. Ryan Babb, from Troy University, second interception return for a touchdown made the score 50-20.
Columbus would score eleven points in the fourth quarter and Lafayette would get a late touchdown to make the final score was 61-26.
“Give Columbus credit. This is three games in a row they beat us. Congratulations to their entire organization, best of luck in the Championship game,” said Wildcatter head coach Skip Foster.
Team President Ray Ronquillo said, “We want to thank our fans for their support throughout the season. We had two bus loads of fans make the trip here tonight, and we can’t thank them and all of our fans enough. We are disappointed for our season to end like this, but we learned a lot this year, and we want our fans to know that they deserve a Championship and we are committed to bringing them that Championship. Congratulations to Columbus. The entire Wildcatter organization wishes them the best in the Championship game.”
The Wildcatters will now turn their focus to the 2011 season.
