Wildcatters Win a Thriller
The Lafayette Wildcatters offense must have remained in Lafayette for the first three quarters of Saturday night's game in Lake Charles, but when they finally showed up they gave everyone their money's worth.
Trailing 30 - 10 to start the fourth quarter, the Wildcatters went on a 10 play 34 yard drive that pulled them to within 30-17. The Wildcatter defense, that held the Swashbucklers to 147 yards on the night, came up big once again on the next Swashbuckler possession holding the Swashbucklers without a first down. The offense needed only two plays to go 42 yards to pull to within 30-24. The touchdown was scored on a tremendous catch by Tim Richmond in the far corner of the end zone against the boards.
However, there was still work to be done. This time the defense did the scoring honors when Mitch Craft came up the middle on a blitz and stripped Swashbuckler quarterback Freddie Harrison of the ball and Eric "Big Cat" Phillips pounced on the ball quick as a cat for the touchdown. Sean Comiskey's extra point was good and the Wildcatters had their first lead of the night 31-30.
There was still 3:43 to go in the game and the Wildcatter defense was up to the challenge. On the Swashbucklers next possession the Wildcatter defense sent them reeling for minus eight yards. The Wildcatters returned the missed field goal to their nine yard line and just had to run out the clock to seal the victory. However, the Swashbucklers defense stiffened and a questionable whistle that ruled Juan Joseph's forward motion was stopped, left the Wildcatters to kick a 53 yard field goal. The field goal was blocked and the Swashbucklers looked to have victory within their grasp with only :32 seconds to go in the game. Three straight incomplete passes set up a chip shot field goal for Swashbuckler kicker, Blake Bercegeay, but he missed it wide right and Juan Joseph snuck ahead for one yard to run out the clock and the Wildcatters and their fans who had made the trip celebrated like it was 1999.
With the win the Wildcatters earn the number 3 seed in the SIFL playoffs and will have to travel to play the number two seed Columbus Lions on Thursday, July the 8th.
