With the second season of the Southern Indoor Football League approaching, the Acadiana Mudbugs have changed their name to the Lafayette Wildcatters and their colors to red, gold and black.  The Wildcatters wanted to be associated with The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the local college, whose colors are vermilion red and black. 

Southern Louisiana is known for housing many oil and gas related companies.  The proximity of Lafayette to the Gulf of Mexico makes it the premier hub for companies and service companies.  The Wildcatters, whose home is Lafayette, want local sponsors.  So far, Dynamic Industries, C&G Boats and Linear Control have signed on to help with 2010 season. 

A wildcatter, a person who drills oil and gas wells in areas that are not know in advance to have oil, hopes to be successful.  SIFL, a new league, is similarly trying to be successful by finding its place in the hearts of the local football fan.

“I think this name change will work well for the team,” said SIFL President Thom Hager.  “The new name will represent Lafayette very well since a large portion of their population works in the oil and gas industries.”

The new Lafayette Wildcatters website, www.lafayettewildcatters.com, will be launched by the end of August.  Fans can stay tuned for information on the offseason and on both upcoming player and cheerleader open tryouts.
